cedar is a very stable wood. it does not warp, shrink, or check, split , as pressure treated pine will likely do eventually. pressure treated pt pine boards can warp and shrink as quickly as one month after installation. at 10 years, a fence using cedar boards will have a much nicer appearance, compared to a pressure treated pine board fence.
re: what size gap when installing cedar decking i have only ever seen deck boards shrink, but i live in a dry climate. i have always used a chisel as a spacer, which is about 3/16'. ends up with a 1/4' gap. pre-staining all four sides should prevent swelling and will definitely help prevent cupping. good luck. a fine cedar deck is an awesome thing
